Creating a circular future by recovering lost nutrients

“Half of all phosphorus applied as fertilizer is lost to the environment”

Runoff of soil & fertilizer

The Problem:

Phosphorus is essential for food production, but conventional fertilizers are poorly designed, especially for tropical climates. Due to heavy rains and reactive soils, most phosphorus fertilizers are washed away or chemically bound, making them inaccessible to plants. This inefficiency forces farmers to over-apply fertilizers, increasing costs and causing severe environmental harm. Yet, at the other end of the food chain, phosphorus is released into the environment from agricultural waste, creating a paradox where this critical nutrient is both scarce and excessively wasted.

Our Solution:

Innovaciones Circulares has developed a breakthrough solution: an enhanced efficient fertilizer (EEF) created from upcycled nutrients. By partnering with livestock farms, we recover phosphorus from their waste and convert it into a natural, controlled-release fertilizer. Our product synchronizes with crop needs, minimizing loss and ensuring nutrients are available when plants need them. Our unique technology is one of the first scalable phosphorus recovery systems tailored for small to medium farms in emerging economies—making sustainable phosphorus management accessible and affordable.

Our technology

We are inspired by nature. Our proprietary technology leverages a natural process to recover phosphorus efficiently from agricultural wastewater, particularly in industries with high concentrations of phosphate and ammonia, like pig farming. Our process is designed to operate at a small-to-medium scale with low capital and operational costs, making it accessible to a broader range of facilities.

Using a bio-based solution, our technology precipitates ammonium phosphate from wastewater into a highly concentrated form, resulting in a product with nearly 30% P2O5. This makes it an ideal controlled-release fertilizer that provides a steady nutrient supply to crops while preventing loss to the environment. Our process also focuses on flexibility and scalability, enabling deployment in regions with varying farm sizes and resource availability.

Currently, we are refining our technology to enhance the removal of additional nutrients like ammonia, aiming to provide a more comprehensive solution for nutrient recovery and circular farming.
